Being a Catholic priest in Australia is no longer a popular profession. The Sydney Morning Herald reported today that the number of priests has declined dramatically over a few decades, and needs to grow markedly to support Catholic communities around Australia. In what some say is a response to the shortage, the National Council of Priests in Australia, submitted to the Vatikan a proposal to allow married man into the world of priesthood. the proposal also stated the church should even open the doors for the ordination of women. Some Catholic academics say that married male priests is nothing new to the Catholic church, but the question of the ministry of women is much more contoversial. Amongst them are, Dr. Paul Collins, Author and ex-Catholic priest, and Dr. Neil Ormerod, Professor of Theology at the Australian Catholic University. They spoke earlier today with The Wire’s Hagar Cohen.
