To Waste or Waste Not?
The issue of nuclear waste is on the political agenda with former Prime Minister Bob Hawke pushing for Australia to take international nuclear waste. Six years ago, a group of elderly Indigenous women from Coober Pedy, won a challenge against the Federal Government, to abandon plans to dump nuclear waste in their community.A book entitled – ‘Talking Straight Out’ – tells the story of their fight. Spokeswoman Nina Brown told Peter Godfrey the story. Still on the topic of energy and waste, Professor David Jamieson of the Australian Institute of Physics, says Australia should apply Einstein’s equation of E=mc2 to generate energy that keeps waste local, instead of pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and making it someone else’s problem. He spoke with Samantha Regione.
