Women in Asia conference
Women from across Asia met in Sydney today to discuss the effects of globalisation and government policy on their lives. The eigth biannual ‘Women in Asia Conference’ wraps up tomorrow and is being held at the University of Technology, Sydney. An international list of speakers and delegates tackled how poverty, inequality and the rise of socially conservative politics are affecting women in Asia. Dr Nicole Constable is a profesor of anthropolgy at the University of Pittsburgh. She presented a paper to the conference today, on the study of ‘trafficked’ women. Debra Yatim is a freelance journalist and activist in Aceh. Currently she is advising the Indonesian government in tsunami reconstruction. Alma Mistry spoke to them both and asked what common issues are impacting on the lives of women in the region.
