In June this year the government announced the biggest changes to the family law system in Australia in 30 years. The reforms include significant amendments of the Family Law Act. The government claims that these reforms are aimed at recognizing the importance of children having the opportunity for both parents to have a meaningful influence in their lives. However, serious concerns have been raised that the proposed changes may further strain relations between separated parents and jeopardize the safety of children. One of the most significant changes to the Family Law Act is the introduction of a presumption of joint parental responsibility. This means that partners should jointly make decisions about major long-term issues in children’s lives. Tristan Burt spoke with Edward Dabrowski, Federal Director of the Shared Parenting Council of Australia about why the introduction of this presumption was necessary.
