GMO protests outside Berlin
Last year, Biotech companies succeeded in overturning a 6-year EU moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified crops. But just 2 months ago, EU environment ministers agreed to uphold 8 national bans on specific strains of GM maize and rapeseed due to concerns over the safety of these products. In Germany on Sunday, hundreds of anti-GMO demonstrators met in a field, 40 kilometres outside of Berlin, to protest against a recently planted genetically modified crop. They were watched by a large police presence. Joining local farmers and residents, families and activists travelled from Berlin city, and from across Europe to voice their opposition.
