Death of innocent bystander raises concern over shoot-to-kill policy
The Brazilian government has called for an official explanation from the UK over the shooting of its 27-year-old national, Jean Charles de Menezes. The man was shot late on Friday in the London tube station of Stockwell, after being mistaken for a suicide bomber. The shooting came one day after London faced its second round of bombings, which up until jean Charles’ death, had claimed no lives. The British Metropolitan Police force has admitted the death was a tragic accident and have vowed to investigate the incident thoroughly. However, observers are concerned that the new shoot to kill policy, adopted after the first round of London Bombings, may be left unchanged. This report begins with comments from Garath Crossnin, the Director of Policy at UK civil rights group, Liberty. He outlined his hopes for the police inquiry into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes.
