Commentators were last night describing Federal Treasurer Peter Costello’s 10th budget as surprisingly generous in terms of tax cuts. But the groups that were either targeted for cutbacks, or completely left out, describe Budget 2005, as disappointing to say the least. Democrats Indigenous Affairs Spokesman Aden Ridgeway says compared with last year, there is little on offer. The new budget also brings tougher assessments for people with disabilities. ACROD’s Ken Baker says the scheme must come with supporting measures. The Queenslanders with Disability Network’s Greg Wagner rejects the plan as making people with disabilities vulnerable to future financial hardship. Sole parents will be compelled to work at least 15 hours a week after their youngest child turns six, from July next year. The National Council of Single Mothers’ Jac Taylor says the plan will mean sole parent families will have more stress and less parenting of children, while single Mum Margy Jackson says it will be tough.
