New laws introduced last week have given the National Indigenous Children’s Commissioner stronger powers to carry out her role.
The changes formally strengthen Commissioner Sue-Ann Hunter’s ability to advocate for Indigenous children and hold governments accountable.
While major issues affecting Indigenous children persist across the states and territories, Commissioner Hunter says she won’t launch any immediate investigations or inquiries.
Instead, she will review past reports and findings to understand why some recommendations have not been implemented.
