SA’s legislative council will debate late-term abortion laws next week. It’s the third attempt by conservative law-makers in just under two years. Independent MLC Sarah Game’s bill proposes to restrict abortion access after 24 weeks and six days, except where the mother’s life is at immediate risk. This legislation removes some foetal abnormalities and mental health as justification for performing a late-term abortion.

Pro-choice advocates say it’s part of nation-wide attempts to wind back abortion access.

Following South Australia’s election, the state’s upper house has seen increase in seats held by conservative-leaning and right-wing minor parties, leaving pro-choice advocates with real concern about their balance of power.
