Symposium pushes for preservation of Indigenous language in Torres Strait

Language experts gathered in the Torres Strait last week for the 2026 Zenath Kaz Language Symposium.

More than 120 delegates convened on Waibene Thursday Island to discuss the future direction of the languages in the region.

So far, the Torres Strait zone speaks two Indigenous languages, considered as severely endangered, and an English-based creole one.
