Imagine you were 14, and had to take care of your mum or dad who suffered from a mental or physical illness – that’s the reality for almost 400,000 carers under the age of 26 in Australia. Even though they did not choose this role, more often than not they embrace it. New research by Carers Australia has revealed not only the staggering number of young people with caring responsibilities, but also sheds light on the alarming lack of community recognition and support, from policy makers and service providers. A two day summit is currently being held in Sydney, addressing the unique vulnerabilities presented by this growing group of carers, who display a disproportionate level of poor physical and mental health, as well as being at serious risk of leaving school early. She-Fah Szetu spoke with Louise Gillmore, president of Carers Australia about the problems facing young carers, and she also spoke with Samuel Cooper who talked about caring for his mum.
