Today… June the 5th, is World Environment Day. Started by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, it’s aim is to focus worldwide attention on the importance of the environment and stimulate political action. Of course today, the politics of climate has become everyday… as governments around the world grapple with ways to fight global warming. Yesterday the Chinese governement, who’d not previously been drawn on emissions reductions, announced its own targets as part of its Action Plan Against Climate Change. China’s ambitious target has the Australian Greens calling for both the governement and the opposition to step up. However, in New South Wales today, the focus was all on coal mining, as protesters converged on Paliament calling for the blood of Environment Minister Frank Sator – over proposed new mines in the Hunter Valley in NSW.
