Riot police broke up a gay rights demonstration before the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow yesterday, grabbing protesters and throwing them into police cars and a waiting bus. The protest couldn’t have been better timed, as it coincided with the International Day Against Homophobia. This annual event raises awareness of homophobia on the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation took homosexuality of its register of pathological disorders. In Sydney, Community Action Against Homophobia held a rally to advocate for greater rights for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.
