Wobbly Plans for Global Climate Conference in Adelaide
Will they come or won’t they? South Australians were anticipating the arrival of US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld next month for the Asia Pacific Climate Change Conference, until it was announced recently that the visit might be cancelled. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has blamed logistics for the uncertainty, but protest groups believe their pressure has finally succeeded. Stephen Darley is from the Rice-Rumsfeld Reception Committee and spoke to Alex Parry about what he plans to do if the politicians come. A spokesperson for Mr Downer told The Wire that the actions of protest groups have nothing to do with the outcome of the decision for the conference in Adelaide, but have no answers about whether the conference will go ahead or how soon a decision will be made.
