Twenty years ago the UN convention against Torture came into effect, but today two thirds of all countries continue to use torture against their civilians and civilians from other countries. On the international day recognizing victims of torture, a newspaper article alleges the principle architect for the use of torture by the Bush Administration has been uncovered. Overnight the Washington Post alleged that Vice President Dick Cheney has been behind much of the policy making that has ensured that the US has ignore the Geneva convention. Many would argue this disregard for the rights of individuals, as demonstrated by torture perpetrated at both Abu Grab in Iraq and stories emerging from Guantanamo Bay, has done nothing for the US’s image as a supporter of democracy and freedom in the world.
