Greg Killeen is confined to a wheelchair and relies heavily on taxis to get around. Several years ago he complained to transport authorities because many supposedly wheelchair accessible taxis couldn’t fit his wheelchair in. After five years of getting the bureaucratic runaround he took his complaint to the Human Rights Commission but they had no power to help so he has had to take the case to court at his own expense. Today he was able to withdraw his case because transport NSW deciede to change the rules so all taxis have to comply. His lawyer Gemma Namey from the Public Interest Advocacy Centre says the case highlights the need for the Human Rights Commission to have its powers in such cases returned.
