Centrist Emmanuel Macron is celebrating a resounding victory over his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen in the second round of the French presidential election.

The win sees the European Union breathe a collective sigh of relief, with the prospect of a ‘Frexit’ off the table.

Now Macron faces the challenge of converting his successful campaign and political movement, En Marche!, into a political party, or a coalition of parties.

The legislative elections to elect the National Assembly will be held in June.
