In NSW, the miracle cures for the state’s drought come thick and fast. Following poor public reception for a planned desalination plant, the NSW government has proposed to pipe subterranean water from the Kangaloon aquifer in the state’s Southern Highlands to Warragamba dam. Allowing no drastic changes in water policy following this Thursday’s Federal water summit, pumping will begin at the end of this month. In February last year, NSW Premier Morris Iemma told the Sydney Morning Herald “We’ve solved the problem, we can drought proof Sydney, we’ve found these ‘underground lakes’ in the Southern Highlands.” They appointed a community group, the Upper Nepean Community Reference Group, to explore the complexities of such a move. The Wire spoke to the Save the Water Alliance’s Bernard Eddy and asked him about the group’s findings.
