Farmers around Australia are calling for strict liability provisions to be introduced following the discovery of a second batch of canola found to have been contaminated with genetically modified material. Coming only a month after a batch of GE-free canola in Victoria was found to have been contaminated, farmers are shocked that Gentically Modified material was discovered in a batch of Canola in Western Australia. And while the economic effects of the find are yet to be felt, farmers are urging for legislation that will protect them from the inevitable loss of income that will result if the contamination is more widespread. Charles Gregory reports.
