The case of Vivian Alvarez-Solon, the Australian citizen who was wrongfully deported to the Philippines in July 2001 exploded today, with a protest staged outside The Department of Immigration in Sydney. Only hours after a team of Australian lawyers flew to the Philippines to begin legal proceedings against the federal government for Ms Alvarez Solon’s wrongful detention, calls were being made for a Royal Commission into her case. The opposition leader Kim Beazely has also demanded the resignation of Immigration Minister, Senator Amanda Vanstone. The Wire’s Anja Kueppers was at the protest, and spoke to some of the organisers about what they hoped to achieve.
