Xanana Gusmão, charismatic Timor Leste leader is in Australia for a brief tour to launch his new book Raising a Nation. He started off as a guerilla leader and became the first East Timor President in 2002. He most recently has been Prime Minister, but in a unifying gesture elected to step down in February in favour of an old Fretilin rival Rui Maria de Araújo. He has stayed on as Minister for Planning and Strategic Investment however, so he will be still fighting for a fair share of oil and gas reserves in the Timor Sea against, you guessed it, Australia.
