It’s been two years since the pro-democracy uprising in the island Kingdom of Bahrain began and although Bahrain is a strong ally of the United States, their ‘Arab Spring’ has garnered little of the world’s attention.

This small island nation has big geopolitical importance – Bahrain houses one of the US’s most important naval bases, the Fifth Fleet, responsible for monitoring the Persian Gulf. Violence and a heavy-handed crackdown by Bahrain’s rulers has marred what began as a peaceful pro-democracy movement…and the plight of jailed medical staff and teaching professionals is now in the spotlight.
