A bill tabled in Parliament this afternoon is expected to allow women freedom to have an abortion for up to 6 months into a pregnancy. The bill is seeking to remove abortion from the Crimes Act, which states it’s a criminal offence to attempt, aid or conduct the procedure. In Australia, the ACT is the only state or territory to completely legalise abortion. The Australian Christian Lobby has criticized the bill, saying that it will only increase the abortion rate. Pro Choice Vic, on the other hand, are disappointed and say the government is ignoring the 81 percent of Australians who support a woman’s right to choose.
