Uranium mining has been put back on the agenda around the country after the West Australian Labor government looks set to tackle the question at its party conference in November. While all Labor governments banned any further uranium mines in 1983, calls have been made for a debate following price rises and an international demand for the so-called “yellow-cake”. But while some are highlighting the cost efficiency and environmentally friendly aspects of uranium mining, others are concerned that the impact on Australia, which boasts around 43% of the world’s low-cost uranium, would be devastating. Charles Gregory reports.
