University rankings rely on unreliable results
The official list ranking Australia’s publicly funded universities was released today with surprising results. The order will provide a framework as to how the quarter of a billion dollar fund from the Government will be divided into tertiary institutions. Spokesman for the National Tertiary Education Union, Paul Kniest, says the list is far from being fair. He says a damning report issued by AccessEconomics – the organisation commissioned by Education Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson, to evaluate criteria used to determine the rankings – discredits the list’s viability. Rather, he maintains that there are no sufficient grounds for such a list to exist, with the diversity of uni’s creating unequivocal performance.
