Workplace awards, including penalty rates, will be under review according to an announcement from the Abbott Government today. Employment Minister Eric Abetz says the Australian economy cannot sustain high wages, and employers may resit hiring workers. However, union officials and the opposition were quick to criticise the government. Lashing out at the review, they say Australian’s who working during ‘unsociable’ hours, including those in hospitality and emergency services, rely on penalty rates.
