UN Engaging Communities Conference
Commentators have been predicting that Brisbane will soon have a United Nations Declaration to it’s name, by the end of this week’s International Conference on Engaging Communities. The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council’s Darryl Pearce was making the most of the platform to notify the International community of his opinion on the so-called “quiet revolution” of Shared Responsibility Agreements. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Policy John Mickel says he feels reassured by statements of support for state government methods by a United Nations delegate. While the Mayor of Yarrabah, Vince Mundraby says Indigenous Disadvantage is front and center as a concern. UN Representative Elissavet Stamattopoulou-Robbins says that while Indigenous people represent 5% of the world’s population, they represent 20% of the world’s poor.
