As Australians, we love to recognise our war heroes and pride ourselves on a strong history of mateship and bravery, but little is said about the courage of the Timorese people who fought alongside us in the Second World War. Paul Clearly is a journalist for The Australian and has worked as a consultant for East Timor Prime Minister Alkatiri. He’s written a book, The Men Who Came Out Of The Ground (Hatchette Australia), a story about Australia’s campaign in East Timor in 1942.
