A protest at the University of New England turned ugly last Tuesday night when rival student groups clashed. One group of students had been protesting outside a lecture given by Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, when they had soap thrown at them by a group of students who were there to support the minister. Witnesses say the University of New England Students Association were lending their support to the pro-Downer group, and were handing out free beer to people joining their cause.
