The Cambodian town of Poi Pet is situated on the border with Thailand. It’s an impoverished region, but many poor and broken drift to the town, hoping the border can change their fortunes. The region also attracts drugs and violence. But a Swiss NGO called Goutte D’eau has set up a theatre group there made up of recovering drug addicts, street kids and gang members. They produce a show and then tour it in neighbouring cities, warning younger Cambodians about the dangers of delinquency. The Wire’s southeast Asian correspondent Jay Lamey armed himself with a microphone and went out for a night of theatre.
