The coast of Somalia is an increasingly dangerous place for shipping, with pirate attacks on the increase. This year the pirates really upped the ante when they executed four Americans… in the past their habit was to demand large ransoms and then let their hostages go. Canadian freelance journalist Jay Bahadur decided he wanted to understand what’s driving the increase in piracy and why so many Somalian men become pirates. He spent some time in Northern Somalia embedded with a pirate gang.
