A new study on penguin species caught by fishing techniques was published this week, and it includes the South American coast, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. In Australia, according to the repot, 14 species of penguins are endangered thanks to the gillnets, especially around Tasmania.

BirdLife Tasmania has pushed the issue for the last 15 years, but the Tasmanian government has only registered 10,000 gillnets, without any certainty of how many of them are in the Tasmanian coast. The recreational gillnet fishing not only affects sea birds, but many other endangered species.
