Taser death in NSW puts the weapon under the spotlight

A man has died in NSW after being hit in the chest with a Taser stun gun. Meanwhile in Western Australia, a Corruption and Crime Commission (or triple C) report has revealed an over reliance on Tasers in that state. The triple C released CCTV footage of a subdued Indigenous man being tasered 13 times at a watch house in Perth in 2008. While the WA Attorney General Christian Porter described the incident as “completely indefensible”, many police units defend the Taser as a legitimate alternative to firearms. But if Tasers are an alternative to guns, why are people dying? And how legitimate is it to use one in non-life threatening situations?
