But some observers say that this massacre also has links to Syria’s sectarian divides, further complicating the picture and adding to the likelihood of a cycle of retribution.UN envoy Kofi Annan is on his way to the region, but as the violence escalates, his peace plan looks increasingly unlikely to gain a foothold.

To Syria now, and in the wake of a shocking massacre the UN has condemned the violence and called on the regime to pull back its troops and heavy weapons from population centres. While Russia and China have in the past been reluctant to put pressure on Syria’s leader, Bashar Al-Assad, even they signed up to the unanimous statement adopted by the security council.
