The Assad regime’s air strikes on a busy market in Douma on the weekend has been described by Amnesty International as one of the deadliest of the civil war and raised allegations of human rights abuses by the regime. The severity of the attacks suggest the regime is becoming increasingly desperate and the shifting geopolitics of the region means Assad is losing some of his traditional support. While the West remains at an impasse on how to deal with Syria, the country’s people continue to suffer.
