The Communications Law Centre in Sydney has a reputation for being the only independent body that strongly reviews important media issues. It was instrumental in it’s policy work on the “cash for comment” scandal that lifted the veil on deals with high profile commercial broadcasters Alan Jones and John Laws for undisclosed on-air support. Sydney’s Communications Law Centre has existed for 17 years with a sister office in Melbourne. It’s been part of the University of New South Wales for three years – but the Sydney centre is now being told that it will be shut down in two weeks, on June the 30th. If the CLC closes, a valuable voice amongst the cacophony of private and government interests will be lost. Reged Ahmed speaks with Mark Ryan (Assistant Federal secretary for the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance), Kathleen Solarie (manager of the consumer interest team at the Australian Communications Authority)and others.
