Survey shows the Stolen Generation message isn’t getting through
A survey released in Brisbane today shows that most indigenous people aren’t aware that they can claim up to $4000 from the Queensland government as part of a compensation deal from the Stolen Wages case. Local radio manager and identity Tiger Bayles says although the government has set aside over 50 million dollars to pay the claims it isn’t getting the message across to people who are eligible. However he says it’s unfair that the money can’t be claimed on behalf of a deceased person, as much present disadvantage is because of previous generations having their wages taken by the government. A bumper sticker saying “This State Was Built on Stolen Wages” has been released as part of a campaign to change the compensation rules.
