For the second time this year, the round ball made its mark on the international sporting arena. This time, it was not in Germany but on the streets of South Africa. The fourth annual Homeless World Cup, which finished on the weekend, united teams of disadvantaged people from all over the globe in a week long street soccer tournament. Because corporate funding was one of the elements necessary to ensure the event got off the ground, The Wire looked into the motivations behind big businesses’ support for supporting the event and spoke to George Halkias, Street Socceroos coach, Max Avram, Street Socceroos coach mentor and representive for Australia at the 2005 Homeless World Cup and Benny Armstrong, last minute reserve for 2006 Australian HWC team.
