If you’ve got an eye on the urban landscape, you may have noticed a new style of art appearing on the streets and walls of Australia’s cities. With images blending revolutionary motifs and counter-cultural messages, stencil-art has emerged to rival graffiti as a form of urban artistic expression. Melbourne has one of the largest stencil art scenes in the world, and last weekend saw Australia’s first stencil art festival held there. James Fletcher spoke to stencil artists Satta and Okipa as well as Greens mayor of Yarra City Council Greg Barber, about the techniques and inspirations for stencilling, as well as relations between artists and councils.
