Alcohol restrictions in Indigenous communities are not a new idea. Liquor restrictions have been implemented across the country to curb alcohol related problems, both socially and health-wise. But the Western Australian Government has reached new heights of controlling their communities’ alcohol consumption. The first of its kind in Australia, the restrictions called snap-bans, are 48 hour alcohol restrictions that are controlled directly by the Halls Creek police force. Hall’s Creek senior sargeant David Hornsby, will chose what, when and how these restrictions will work, and believes his team can handle the pressure. The local alcohol centre co-ordinator Peter Frewen can understand why these limitations have been placed on the community and believes this positive reinforcement can bring a lot of good to Halls Creek.
