Secret location of GM crops revealed

A group opposed to genetically modified food has publicly released the secret locations of four modified crops in rural Victoria. The GM crops are being grown by chemical giant Bayer, and were revealed by the Gene Ethics Network, following a freedom of information application. According to the group, GM free crops in Victoria could be at risk of being polluted by the four genetically manipulated canola crop sites in the region. GM crop advocates argue that genetic engineering is the only way of supplying the world’s growing food demands. But opponents say GM crops pose a dangerous threat to Australia’s sustainable food production. It also says there is an increasing consumer demand for GM free food. Anja Kueppers spoke to Bob Phelps, the Executive Director of GeneEthics, about what effects GM crops have on their surroundings, and what the alternatives to GM crops are.
