The harvesting of whales has been a controversial issue for decades. Japan is an infamous practitioner of whaling and has spurred the plight of animal rights activists such as Greenpeace co-founder, and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society International founder, Paul Watson. On Monday Watson’s ship allegedly rammed into a Japanese whaling ship, inciting much discussion in the pacific region about how best to combat this barbaric practice. Last night Watson signed an agreement not to attack Japanese fleet in return for New Zealand’s assurance they will intervene in the event of future whaling. Sue Arnold, the co-ordinator for Australians for Animals International is devastated that protection of whales has come to this, and is adamant that the only sure solution is government intervention.
