Same Sex Marriage Bill tabled in Tassie
This week, Tasmanian State Greens tabled a bill in parliament that aims to legalize marriage for same sex couples. Last year’s amendment of the Marriage Act by the Howard Government, was thought to have effectively shut off this avenue to gays and lesbians. However Constitutional legal expert, professor George Williams believes this new state legislation could co-exist alongside the federal Marriage Act, because quote “the two acts operate in different fields of the law”. While the Bill is yet to navigate its way through both houses of parliament in Tasmania, the Greens have also announced they will be tabling similar legislation in other state parliaments around the country. State Greens MPs Nick McKim spoke earlier on the issue with Erica Vowles.
