The review of the Northern Territory Intervention, due today, has been given an extension until the middle of October. One of Kevin Rudd’s election promises, the review board was set up to assess how the intervention had performed over 12 months. Earlier this year the government reinstated Community Development Employment Projects (or CDEPs) and the permit system, but apart from these two changes communities on the ground have seen little difference between Labor and Liberal government policies. Whilst communities and their advocates eagerly await the outcome of over 200 submissions, there is speculation that the board will recommend significant changes in the upcoming report.
