In the heat of the West Australian Outback, over three hundred kilometers from the coast, stands a mysterious red rock named Walga. The rock bears over thirty meters worth of ancient indigenous artwork, aswell as an unexplained cave painting of a ship. This week, ownership of the rock has been officially returned to it’s traditional owners, the Wajarri people of Western Australia. Simon Hawkins from the Yamatji Land and Sea Council says the agreement is a huge achievement for the Wajarri people. The exchange of ownership means that tourism to the area can now be regulated to proctect the cultural value of the site. The rock site will in future be managed by a joint stakeholders’ comittee, which will assist with it’s care and maintenance.
