Representatives of Gamillaroi nation join for historic talks
Key family representatives from within the Gumaroi nation have joined together for historic talks in New South Wales, with seven nations united together as one Gumaroi group. Discussions revolved around the need to take responsibility and replace white programs with Aboriginal initiatives – with an interim governing council elected to design a new pathway for the Gumaroi people. Spokesman Michael Anderson says the council will be made up of one recognised elder plus one male and one female representative designated by each family group. Mr Anderson is calling for Gumaroi people from around the nation to stand up and be part of the group – and they hope to see other Indigenous groups from around the nation get involved.
