UTS Adjunct Professor in Journalism, Peter Manning, has just published a new paper entitled “Dog Whistle Politics and Journalism: Reporting Arabic and Muslim People in Sydney Newspapers”. The result of a 2 year study, the paper argues that the number of articles about Arabic or Muslim people published in both The Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph jumped markedly around the events of September 11 2001 and the Australian Federal Election of the same year. However the study also found that although these events acted as a catalyst for the increased coverage, the resulting articles were largely focused on the Middle East conflict and related issues.
