Refugees Left On The Islands
Yesterday, members of the last family held in detention on Nauru finally left the island. Meanwhile two Vietnamese families detained on Christmas Island have also been granted protection visas and released. The Government has been quick to publicise the fact that families and children in particular are being released. However, around 30 men remain on Nauru and 12 on Christmas Island. Annie Hastwell spoke to Marion Le from Refugee Council of Australia, who says the families are pleased to have left but feel sorry for those left behind. Gordon Thompson, president of Shire Council on Christmas Island says he can’t work out why the twelve men left on the island haven’t been granted visas as well.
