Its 60 years since Australia embarked on a large-scale migration program. And while most if not all of us know someone who comes from a family that emigrated to Australia since world war two, what is less known is how many people have come here as refugees. In fact, since 1947, seven hundred thousand people have migrated to Australia as refugees or for humanitarian reason, making up 11% of out total migration since this time. This report to mark Refugee Week, begins with Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner Graeme Innes, discussing the contribution that many refugees have made to Australia.
