As the #YourRightToKnow campaign, backed by many in the Australian media sector continues to gain enormous momentum across the country, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has reiterated that nobody is above the law, not even journalists, himself or anyone else.

With Australia’s international reputation suffering from an increasingly restrictive, untrustworthy news gathering environment after raids led by the Australian Federal Police against News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst and the ABC in June, the Alliance for Journalists’ Freedom says that we cannot allow trust within the profession, security forces and government agencies to become eroded without it exposing whistleblowers to public scrutiny, criminal prosecution and causing division that undermines the motives of any journalist reporting on issues that are protected under national security legislation.
